Day 1: Your Homestead

Dear Student,

I’ve designed this course to walk you through several different aspects of becoming self-sufficient. To begin, I’ll introduce you to the basics of farming. Over the next eight days, you’ll be given a crash course on how to prepare your property for farming, whether on a small or large scale…

So, first things first: Where do you want to set up your new self-sufficient life?

Maybe you plan on staying put and implementing these ideas in your current home.

But many folks I talk to about this idea want a new home… possibly overseas… and they need help deciding where and what to purchase.

Taking time to select a property that’s right for you is a crucial step if you’re buying for a self-sufficient homestead. Rushing a decision now will only encumber you with a property that might not meet your needs. Best case scenario, you’ll end up with a less efficient homestead, but, worst case, you have to sell the property to buy something more suitable.

Property requirements differ per individual and situation, of course, and according to your goals. In the end, you are the one who has to decide what is critical for you and what isn’t, but I can get you started in this thinking with a good general checklist.

Here are some questions to get you started in your thinking; your answers will determine what you end up shopping for…
