Cold frames function similarly to a greenhouse but are very inexpensive. Cold frames are placed over raised beds, and their tops can be raised on one end on hot days to prevent scorching or cooking the plants.
Easily made from scrap materials, old windows or wooden frames with plastic sheeting covering them are used to heat the soil during the day to allow early planting and late harvesting.
