Do you have enough grass space to pasture raise a pig? (Figure one-eighth of an acre of grass; less if fruit trees are available.)
Do you have enough waste vegetables and fruit on your farm to feed a pig?
Is there a source of free pig feed close by? (Restaurants, food processing plants, off-farm agricultural wastes?)
Research slaughterhouses, butchers, and any other meat processing services that might be available to you nearby if you’re not interested in butchering personally.
When you are ready, start your piggery by buying two piglets and raise them on the free feed sources you identified.
Happy homesteading,
