Day 27 Assignment

Do a little internet research to find some expat organizations in the destination you’ve got your eye on…

Some good places to get started:

  • Search Facebook for “expats in X” or Canadians/Americans in X.” Experiment with different town or city names nearby in addition to your own to cast a wide net.
  • Head to meetup.com and type in your destination and something you’d like to do with others… book club, tennis, bridge, dancing, etc.
  • Google “expat groups in X” and then get more specific—search for expat clubs for women, parents, retirees, by nationality, by religion, etc.

Don’t be afraid to get in touch with people or groups ahead of your move—they might have some great advice… who knows, you might even end up with a friend before you even arrive.

In cities, there could be dozens of groups to choose from. If you’re planning to move to a rural place, though, the nearest club might be as far as the nearest city. If that’s the case, you should still reach out—they might serve as a kind of hub for foreigners in the area, and either way they should be helpful to get the ball rolling.
