Start reducing the heat in rooms or areas of your home that are not often used, like conservatories and utility rooms.
Do you know how well you home is insulated? What is its insulation rating? When was it last done?
If you don’t know or know it isn’t currently efficiently insulated, get a quote from an insulation installer for an upgrade.
Get quotes for the installation of solar heaters and geothermal heaters in your home and consider if it makes economic sense.
Seek out free sources of firewood in your area. It’s often available for free if you transport it yourself. Be careful not to use wood in fireplaces that have been treated with chemicals or creosote, as these release toxins when burned.
If you have access to a wood lot, start to manage it by cutting up any dead or “trash” trees on it. You can pay someone to do it for you if you prefer.
Start stockpiling wood under a tarpaulin until you have enough salvaged to build a wood shed.
