- First, make a household budget for your current expenses. Next, make a budget projection of what you could realistically save by taking on the financially self-sufficient lifestyle I illustrated at the start of this lesson.
- Talk to your friends and neighbors about what artisan products they would buy if they were available. Talk to local boutique stores about their requirements.
- Make list of the hobbies or interests you have. Consider how much of any three of your favorite crafts or food products you would have to sell to make your current post taxation requirement. (If you currently make US$30,000 and pay US$10,000 in income tax, you only need US$20,000 in non-taxed craft income to replace this.)
- Try five new crafts or hobbies that you think could be interesting cottage industries. When you find one you like, consider starting selling this product locally at first.
