- Survey your lawn, backyard, or acreage to see where the best location for a grow house would be. You want them to be south-facing, close to water and power, and to receive unobstructed light.
- Assess the possibility of building a walipini. Is the soil stable enough to retain integrity? What latitude do you live at? Can you access the proposed location with a digging machine?
- Keep an eye out for salvageable materials that could be used in constructing your grow house(s) and collect them as they become available (lumber, plastic, old windows, door frames, etc.).
- Build a simple cold frame and grow vegetables earlier or later than their usual growing season in your climate.
