Climate will have a huge impact on your self-sufficiency endeavor and will dictate much about the systems you can put in place for support.
It will also affect the type of materials used in construction, whether you require cooling or heating, and whether you can grow food year-round or just during the summer and autumn months.
Consider the following:
- Are you living in an arid or fertile area? That is, does your current region lend itself to growing crops?
- Are you in the desert or the far north? Again, does your current region’s climate lend itself to crops and/or livestock or work against you?
- Do you wish to stay in this climate? For those who want to stay put living in arid or super-cold climates, your options for self-sufficiency will be more limited.
- Do you want or are you willing to move to a warmer climate?
