Day 13 Assignment

  1. If you currently have no garden, buy a few seeds that interest you and plant some. Feel free to start small—window boxes are an easy place to start. As they grow, practice letting them go to seed and harvesting seeds.
  1. If you already have a garden, try letting a couple of good healthy plants that you grow go to seed.
  1. Start selecting exceptional crop plants that grow in your garden. Decide what characteristics you want to try for: size of vegetable, total yield, time to harvest, etc. and grow these this year.
  1. Replant these next year, and at the end of the season select another set of vegetables to let go to seed, using the same selection criteria you did last time.
  1. By the third crop you should be well on your way to selectively breeding your own vegetable!
  1. Do some research on cross-pollinating of plants, particularly the plants you are going to try, and selectively breed.
  1. Identify the pitfalls of cross-pollination. Factor these into the plan you have for your own customized vegetable.
