- Estimate how much fish, salad, and vegetables your family would realistically eat if they were available, organic, and free.
- Estimate how much it would cost to buy this amount of organic produce in your area per week. This is how much a small aquaponics system could save you.
- Do some polling to find out if any friends, family, or neighbors would be interested in buying what your system is producing. Based on your cost analysis, estimate how much their orders could earn you.
- Check your and your friends’ backyards for lumber, tanks and tubs that might be reused as aquaponic system components.
- Go online or to a store to find out what a small submersible pond or fountain pump will cost you (they aren’t expensive).
- Do an inventory of what kitchen-based or on farm-based fish feedstuffs are available to you. You might be able to collect kitchen wastes from your customers or neighbors to convert into fish feed, too. You will quickly see that a backyard aquaponics system or a small-scale commercial system can be an easy and lucrative hobby to have.
