Making Yogurt

You can make yoghurt at home using common kitchen supplies.

As an alternative, yogurt makers consisting of a plastic thermos with a small heat element that keeps the yogurt at the correct culture temperature are inexpensive.

Ingredients:

½ gallon milk

2 tbsps. thickener (pectin or gelatin) OR ¼ cup dry milk powder

1 packet yogurt starter OR ¼ cup live culture yogurt

Process:

  1. Heat milk to 180°F.
  2. Let cool to 116°F, add starter, and mix well.
  3. Keep at 116°F for six hours or until it has thickened.
  4. Refrigerate and consume within two weeks.
  5. Fruit and flavorings can be added to taste.
